Turner Construction in the Tishman Speyer Spiral Building

Turner is an international construction services company. Founded in 1902, Turner first made its mark on the industry pioneering the use of steel-reinforced concrete for general building, which enabled the company to deliver safer, stronger, and more efficient and resilient buildings to clients. The company continues to embrace emerging technologies and offers an increasingly diverse set of services. With an annual construction volume of US $15 billion, Turner is the largest builder in the United States, ranking first in the major market segments of the building construction field, including healthcare, education, sports, commercial, and green building. The firm is a subsidiary of HOCHTIEF, an engineering-led global infrastructure group.

The spiral building is a new Class A skyscraper at 66 Hudson Boulevard East in New York City. The building’s development was announced in 2016, and Turner Construction currently occupies the 35th and 36th floors that serve as the construction firm’s NYC offices.

Challenge

Turner Construction wanted to create a healthier and cleaner working environment for their employees as they came back to work within an office environment.

The additional goals of the project included the WELL Building Standard which Turner has implemented in a new branding initiative to include health and wellbeing at the center of its design phase process. The company has applied for both WELL and LEED certification for the building.

Solution

Turner installed AtmosSmart and AtmosAware monitoring systems designed to provide occupants with indoor air quality transparency. Currently, there are 16 AtmosAware wall mounted sensors and each of the four air handlers have an AtmosSmart in-duct sensor to control the ionization output as well as report IAQ data to the BMS (what’s BMS/say it) system. There are eight AtmosAir 500 series ion generators that have been installed specifically for air purification. A lobby view dashboard exists on a 50’ monitor on the 35th floor reception area to show real -time indoor air data within the office space.
