CBRE China HQ, SH

In May 2023, CBRE’s China headquarters relocated from Park Place to the newly renovated JC Plaza in Shanghai, focusing on air quality and wellness. Partnering with AtmosAir and GAMS, CBRE implemented advanced air purification and monitoring systems to create a healthier workspace.

Challenge

To address air quality concerns in the newly renovated JC Plaza office, including particulate matter, infection transmission risks, and odors from construction materials, while ensuring employee well-being and productivity.

Solution

CBRE collaborated with AtmosAir to install dielectric barrier discharge bipolar ionization (DBD BPI) units in the HVAC system’s Air Handling Units (AHUs), treating air across the office. GAMS monitoring systems, including Kaiterra Mini monitors, were deployed to measure PM2.5, TVOC, CO2, temperature, and humidity in key areas like the library, open workspaces, pantry, and meeting rooms. Air quality data was collected during operating hours to assess the system’s effectiveness.

Results

Post-installation data showed PM2.5 levels consistently below WHO standards (15 µg/m³), with an 80-90% reduction compared to outdoor levels. TVOC spikes from daily activities were quickly mitigated by the HVAC and DBD BPI systems, and renovation-related TVOC emissions were minimal. CO2 levels remained below 700 ppm, indicating good ventilation and opportunities for energy optimization.
