University of Southern California
John McKay Training Center

The University of Southern California (USC) is a prestigious private research university with a large student body of over 44,000 and a faculty of 4,800. Situated in a bustling city, USC serves as an anchor institution in the community.

“At USC, we believe performance both on and off the field is tied to IAQ and keeping our student athletes healthy. BPI has helped our facilities in many ways.”

- Russ Romano, Assistant Athletic Director, USC

Challenge

USC’s renowned athletic program boasts 700 student-athletes participating in 21 sports, supported by a dedicated team of 28 physicians and athletic trainers. Given the athletes’ susceptibility to various health concerns such as skin infections, norovirus, respiratory infections, allergies, asthma, and migraines, ensuring good indoor air quality (IAQ) is a top priority.

Solution

AtmosAir’s bipolar ionization technology was installed in key areas of USC’s prestigious John McKay Center, a state-of-the-art athletic and academic facility spanning 100,000 square feet and representing the university’s storied history. The installation aimed to improve indoor air quality and was accompanied by third-party testing in five specific areas, including the football training center, weight room, locker room, and two open spaces on the first and second floors.

Results

After installation of the AtmosAir systems, third party testing showed reductions in VOCs and PMs, which trigger allergies, asthma and other respiratory issues in athletes, reduced by up to 90%.

Continuous disinfection reduced athlete exposure to H1N1, MRSA, Norovirus and many other illness and infection causing bacteria and viruses.

Results

By employing AtmosAir, there was a notable reduction in athletes’ exposure to harmful bacteria and viruses like H1N1, MRSA, and Norovirus. The decrease in PM10 particles is equally significant, which can be detrimental when inhaled, causing health issues. These improvements in air quality, coupled with the reduction of particulate matter and VOCs, led to the installation of AtmosAir in both the John McKay Center and USC Heritage Hall. As a result, athletes and staff now enjoy a healthier and safer environment.
