Ivy Education Group uses AtmosAir to Improve the Air

The administration at Daystar, part of the Ivy Education Group, was preparing to start the school year at their newly renovated campus in Sanlitun, but they realized that the building had a problem with elevated levels of formaldehyde and TVOCs.  Luckily, the teams at Environment Assured and AtmosAir were able to quickly implement a solution over the October Holiday in order to ensure students didn’t miss any school and parents could send their kids to school worry-free.

Formaldehyde along with many other harmful gasses such as benzene, xylene and toluene that fall under the grouping total volatile organic compounds (TVOC) are a common and serious problem for newly renovated spaces, especially schools.  These gasses get released from materials such as paint, flooring, glues, furniture and other products used in renovation.  They are clearly linked to both short term effects such as headaches and nausea as well as longer term effects such as asthma and cancer.  While these gasses have negative effects for everybody, children are especially sensitive.

Following a careful inspection of the school by the team at Environment Assured the teams at AtmosAir and Environment Assured determined that the best solution would be to place two 500F units in each of the four outside air systems serving the school.  This configuration would optimize distribution of the positive and negative oxygen ions from the AtmosAir systems and these ions would subsequently break down the harmful gasses.  This solution was implemented in a very short timeframe and a subsequent air test was done just days following this implementation.  The results of the air test were great.  Over 31 points, formaldehyde averaged less than 1/5th of the national limit and TVOC averaged less than 1/10th of the national limit.  Benzene, toluene and xylene were all undetectable.

Moreover, both administrators and teachers at Daystar commented that “Besides not only removing the strong smells of new renovation, the AtmosAir systems have made the air smell and feel crisp and clean.”

比赛前,雾气问题已得到解决。

一夜之间,AtmosAir团队安排了25台通常在商业建筑中用于混凝土、环氧树脂和涂料的工业级除湿机。在接下来直到比赛开始前的30小时里,除湿机从体育馆的空气中抽取了数百加仑的水。在此过程中,Joe负责确保除湿机尽可能不影响球迷们和各台电视摄像机的视角,而Sam则与梅赛德斯奔驰体育馆的工程总监紧密合作,减少了送入馆内的潮湿空气量。

当身在异乡的外国铁杆球迷和新生的中国球迷都在享受啤酒和精彩的比赛的时候,AtmosAir和NHL管理层却将目光牢牢锁定在湿度监测仪以及场内的冰面上,时刻关注是否有空气凝结的迹象。只有当代表第三阶段结束的蜂鸣器响起时,他们才能喝喝啤酒松口气儿。

AtmosAir Team Helps the NHL with a Successful Launch in China

Early practices had fog on the ice.

On September 21st, in Shanghai, the Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League (NHL) played the first NHL game ever in China.  With Beijing hosting the 2022 winter Olympics, both the government and the NHL is hoping to build Chinese interest in hockey.  Luckily, while the game went decidedly better for the Kings, winning 5-2 over the Canucks, the NHL and the management at the Mercedes-Benz Arena (MBA) were happy that the facility was able to host the game without any issues.

From the first practice days earlier up to and even during the game, the organizers and staff were concerned the game may be stopped due to a problem unique to hockey…dense fog shrouding the ice.

At initial practices at the MBA, the high humidity of Shanghai had combined with the cold and thus low dew point of the air near the ice, leading to fog so thick that players could not be seen beyond half of the length of the ice.  After wrestling with the problem for a couple days, the general manager of the MBA, Jim Foss, reached out to Sam Michael and Joe Stern at AtmosAir, asking them to come in and take a look.

By game time, the fog had been cleaned up.

Overnight, the team at AtmosAir arranged for 25 industrial sized dehumidifiers, typically used when drying concrete, epoxy and paint in commercial buildings, to be set up throughout the arena.  Over the next 30 hours leading up to game time, the dehumidifiers would extract hundreds of gallons of water from the arena air.  Joe got the dehumidifiers blasting with minimal obstruction of fan and TV camera views.  Sam worked closely with the engineering director at MBA to decrease the volume of humid air being brought into the building.

While long time expatriate hockey fans and new Chinese fans enjoyed the beer and a great game, AtmosAir and the NHL management had their eyes closely locked on humidity sensors and the surface of the ice, looking for any signs of airborne condensation.  Only once the buzzer signaling the end of the 3rd period sounded were they able to breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the beer themselves.

Project Profile: Formula 1 Champion, Fernando Alonso, Breathes in AtmosAir throughout Hilton Austin Stay

In preparation for the most recent Austin Texas Formula 1 race, AtmosAir aligned with Hilton’s Austin Hotel to allow professional F1 racer, Fernando Alonso, the ability to breathe purified air throughout his stay.

As exhibited in last month’s newsletter, this past May 2017, Hilton announced a new guestroom concept, entitled “Five Feet to Fitness,” that lets guests work out in their rooms.  The concept includes an indoor bike from British cycling company Wattbike and a Gym Rax training station with equipment for strength, core, suspension and high-intensity interval training workouts. The rooms also have a meditation chair and blackout shades.

What’s more, is that the Five Feet to Fitness Rooms also include AtmosAir, allowing guests to breathe the purest form of air circulation during their stay.

AtmosAir’s main priority is to make consumers aware that the air they’re breathing is on the same level as healthy air found in nature.

AtmosAir in the News: Departures Magazine

AtmosAir was recently featured in Departures Magazine in the article titled “The New Think: The Amazing Ideas that Shape our World.”

Edited by Julian Sancton, the article profiled the copious benefits defined by how much one can pay for airfare, including the air we breathe while traveling.

As the article indicates, fresh, clean air is becoming more of a quintessential luxury good and a booming sector.  ‘The World Health Organization now calls air pollution “the world’s largest single environmental health risk,” contributing to 3 million deaths each year (more than twice the global death rate from auto accidents).’

Commercial buildings, airports, hotel rooms and even restaurants have started to charge premiums for cleaner environments with the best air quality.  Airports like LAX have installed enhanced purification throughout. The global architecture firm, Gensler, also recently issued a report called “Design for Polluted and Toxic Environments,” concluding that it was imperative, no matter how challenging, to reduce both indoor air pollution and energy consumption in buildings.

The importance of healthy indoor air quality is definitely trending and Departures noted how AtmosAir has been thinking on a grander scale about the social benefits of clean air.

The article notes, ‘AtmosAir is working on improving air quality in sports arenas to bolster athletic performance, office buildings to increase productivity and hospitals to cut down the risk of infection.’

5 Tips for Winterizing Your Home Without Harming Your Health

Many of our residential clients, especially those who reside on the east coast, are more concerned about indoor air quality in their homes during the winter time.

Between allergies and lingering colds, varying temperatures make it even more important to keep your family safe and healthy.

The AtmosAir team has five important things you can do to help winterize your home this season:

1)      Insulate the eco-friendly way.

Keep icy air out of your home by insulating your attic, basement, and/or crawlspace.  Stay healthy by choosing insulation materials like cellulose, that don’t off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may be harmful to human health.

2)      Have your home heating system inspected.

As winter approaches, make sure your furnace, gas fireplace, or other home heating system is running efficiently and safely.  Call an HVAC professional to inspect for any necessary repairs.

3)      Clean your ductwork.

Oftentimes, we find that dust, pet hair and mold can build up within your ductwork.  Have your ductwork professionally cleaned to help your HVAC system circulate cleaner.

4)      Chimney TLC

Clean your flue of any creosote and debris before you start using your fireplace or woodstove this winter. This is important for 2 health-related reasons: 1) reducing fire hazards and 2) safeguarding indoor air quality. When you’re not using the chimney, prevent icy drafts with a chimney balloon or chimney sheep.

5)      Enhance your indoor air quality!

We can’t stress the importance enough!

With your home sealed up tight in winter, your indoor air quality is likely to suffer unless you take measures to properly sanitize and clean your home with an AtmosAir system that dually cleans your air.
